Energy-Saving Tips

Buy Local and Organic
The further an apple has to travel, the more energy is consumed. And organic products use less fertilizer, made from petroleum products, further saving energy.

Drive Less
Reduce how much you drive. Take public transportation. If driving is a must, then carpool.

Hybrid Cars
Choose the most fuel-efficient vehicle the next time you buy or rent a car.

Fly less
Air travel uses huge amounts of fuel. For short trips, take the train or bus.

Home Heating and Cooling
Using window treatments, weather stripping, caulking and other insulations measures to control heat loss/gain can dramatically reduce home heating and air conditioning needs. Use a digital timer to better control air conditioner operation. Clean or change air conditioner, furnace and heat pump filters monthly.

Reduce home and water temperature
Install a programmable thermostat for better temperature control, and set your water heater to warm (120
°F).

High-efficiency appliances
Energy Star appliances consume 2-10 times less electricity. The higher cost is made up in energy savings. Try to avoid appliances that consume large amounts of energy, such as certain wide screen TV's.

Fluorescent lighting
Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), which use far less energy and last up to ten times longer.  If all NYC households replace 75% of standard light bulbs with CFLs, the energy savings would be enough to run all of the subways and light all of the stations.

Reduce or eliminate phantom power
Many home appliances consume power even when turned off—up to 40% of total household power consumption. Choose appliances with low standby energy consumption. Or even better, plug electronics into a power strip.  Turning off the power strip will eliminate the “leaking” of electricity when the device is turned off.

Use water efficiently
A low-flow showerhead cuts water consumption in half. Wash your clothes in cold water.

Green Power
Contact your local energy utility about the availability of environmental-friendly, alternative power options such as renewable energy credits.
