Addressing our American Jewish Challenge: Intra-Jewish Dialogue, Creating a New Vision on November 10
Sponsored by UJA-Federation of New York, American Jewish Committee
New York Chapter, New York Board of Rabbis
November 9, 2005 (New York, NY) — A communal forum featuring Rabbi Irving “Yitz” Greenberg will address the contemporary challenges of diversity in American Jewish life and launch the Intra-Jewish Dialogue project. The event takes place Thursday, November 10, 2005, at B’nai Zion Foundation, 136 East 39th Street, Manhattan, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.
The Intra-Jewish Dialogue brings together leaders of the diverse religious streams, with more than 100 participants representing 20 synagogues. Participants will use Biblical texts and perspectives to explore today’s Jewish New York. Set against the backdrop of our Jewish past, participants will strive to define this richly diverse community and explore communal and cultural contributions to America. Deepening mutual understanding and appreciation transcends denominational boundaries and leads to respect and the ability to work together on the myriad issues that are common to all Jews. The project marks the initiation of similar programs throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Riverdale, Westchester, and on Long Island.
Rabbi Greenberg, essayist of “Will There Be One Jewish People in Year 2000” and President of the Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt Foundation, is instrumental in the launch of this project. From 1974 to 1997, Rabbi Greenberg founded and served as president of The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership (CLAL). He also served as rabbi of the Riverdale Jewish Center; associate professor of history at Yeshiva University; and founder, chairman and professor in the department of Jewish Studies of the City College of the City University of New York.
