AJC?s New York Chapter Welcomes Israeli Clerics

December 8, 2005 - New York - The New York Chapter of the American Jewish Committee and Auburn Theological Seminary are holding an interfaith dialogue featuring three religious leaders - a sheikh, a priest and a rabbi - who will discuss their experience in deepening understanding and cooperation among their respective communities in Israel. The event will take place Tuesday, December 13 at the American Jewish Committee, 165 East 56th Street from 8:00 to 9:30 AM

The December 13 event will bring together a diverse group of Christians and Jews to learn about grassroots interfaith efforts for peace and reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians. Episcopal, Jesuit, Methodist, and Presbyterian leaders will join Jewish participants in learning successful models of interfaith cooperation to promote peace.

The dialogue is part of an American Jewish Committee interfaith initiative, Abrahamic Voices of Peace, which is sponsoring a visit by the religious leaders to five cities across the U.S. to inspire support for peace and security for Israel and the Palestinians. Another trio visited the western U.S. earlier this year.

The three religious leaders are the Rev. Samuel S. Fanous, an Anglican priest and rector of the Emmanuel Anglican Church of Ramle; Sheikh Mithkal Natour, an expert in Arabic and Islamic law who has served as the director general of Jerusalem's Department of Education for Arabic schools; and, Rabbi Ronen Lubitch, an Orthodox educator and spiritual leader of Nir Etzion, a kibbutz in the Carmel Mountains.
